New Boiler at Chabot College Increases Efficiency and Reduces Carbon Footprint
ABOUT CHABOT COLLEGE
Founded in 1961, Chabot College is an accredited community college located in the San Francisco Bay Area. Building heat and hot water are provided by a central plant.
PROBLEM
Initially equipped with boilers in each building, Chabot opted to centralize heating and cooling in the mid 2000s.
The central facility was originally outfitted with three (3) 10.5 MM BTU gas-fired heating hot-water boilers that began suffering from pressure-vessel leaks and other issues that resulted in the need for major repairs every 2 to 3 years.
Additionally, the boilers lacked turn-down functionality, so even a small need for heating necessitated firing up one of the boilers. This led to excessive cycling and poor efficiency
SOLUTION
Once Chabot College decided to invest in new equipment to resolve the problems and improve energy efficiency, Bay City Boiler was brought in to recommend a solution.
“The modular condensing boilers offered by Riello were a great fit for Chabot’s purposes,” indicated Don Patten, Vice President of Sales at Bay City Boiler. “We specified three (3) 4.0 MM BTU Riello condensing boilers that could efficiently heat the buildings utilizing reduced operating temperatures, allowing the boilers to condense.”
“We love that they’re smaller, quieter, and can be adjusted to provide the right amount of heat for the circumstance,” indicated Chuck Bender, Maintenance Supervisor. “Given the importance of this project, we did our homework by seeking input from another institution who had invested in the same boilers. After several years of operation that facility was still enjoying problem-free use.”
