How We Diagnose Tough Problems

Take a look at this recent case study in which we helped a local dairy troubleshoot a serious issue with their steam boiler and get operations up and running quickly.

The Issue:

A large dairy processing facility had difficulty manufacturing adequate steam but could not pinpoint the issue. Not only was steam quality insufficient, but the boiler also was not dependable, and the feedwater system did not function properly. As opposed to experimenting with other boiler maintenance companies that had been tried before, the customer got Bay City Boiler involved.

The Solution:

We identified the issue and installed three steam and gas flow meters to evaluate the demand. Once we realized the boiler burners were part of the problem, we changed them with new ST Johnson units for better control and dependability. But even with the enhanced burners, we were only getting 60% of the expected output due to inefficient boilers. So we reconfigured the steam outlets and implemented other system improvements, which increased steam production to necessary levels. We upgraded the boilers and the deaerator  to keep up with enhanced production requirements, but we did so from the point of already optimizing the overall steam system.

Ongoing Support:

To maintain this high level of performance, we enrolled the client in our Max Uptime boiler maintenance program. We designed a personalized management plan that includes visiting the site monthly to adjust the burners and clean filters. At our suggestion, the client keeps spare parts in stock, such as firing heads, filters, and pumps, to ensure they don’t have downtime while waiting to deliver essential components that are often on backorder.

Boiler Maintenance

Boiler maintenance is the process of regularly checking and servicing the components of your boiler. Keeping your site’s boiler in good condition is essential for manufacturing processes, hot water, sanitization, or building comfort. Regular boiler maintenance can prevent costly repairs and ensure that your boiler runs efficiently.

The most common type of boilers are hydronic, domestic water and combi boilers, a combination of a water heater and a heating system. Other types of boilers include electric boilers, steam  boilers, and oil-fired boilers. Each type of boiler requires a different kind of maintenance, so it’s important to know what type of boiler you have.

Types of Boiler Maintenance

There are two types of boiler maintenance: preventive maintenance and corrective maintenance.

Preventive maintenance is proactive work that is done to prevent future problems. This includes checking the pressure, inspecting the boiler for signs of wear and tear, and cleaning any debris from the system. During a preventive maintenance visit, a technician will check for leaks, inspect the safety valves, and ensure the boiler operates at the correct pressure.

Corrective maintenance is done when there is an issue with the boiler. This maintenance involves diagnosing and repairing the problem so that the boiler can operate safely and efficiently.

Benefits of Using a Professional Boiler Maintenance Company

A professional boiler maintenance company can provide several benefits, including:

Improved efficiency: Properly maintained boilers run more efficiently, which means they use less energy and cost less to operate.

Cost savings: Regular maintenance can help reduce the need for costly repairs and replacements.

Safety: Properly maintained boilers are safer to operate, reducing the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning and other hazards.

Increased lifespan: Regular maintenance can help extend the life of your boiler, saving you money in the long run.

Signs You Need a Boiler Maintenance Company

If you need clarification on whether your boiler needs maintenance, there are a few signs to look for. If your boiler is making strange noises, producing smoke, or not providing enough hot water or steam, it’s a good idea to call a professional. Other signs include:

  • Water is leaking from the boiler
  • Excessive pressure in the system
  • An unusually high energy bill

It’s important to note that some of these signs may indicate a more severe problem, so it’s always best to call a professional if you notice anything out of the ordinary.

Diagnosing Tough Problems with a Boiler Maintenance Company

A professional boiler maintenance company can be invaluable when diagnosing challenging problems with your boiler. They will be able to quickly and accurately diagnose the problem and provide you with a cost-effective solution.

A boiler maintenance company will use specialized tools and equipment to identify the source of the problem. This can help them identify any underlying issues causing the problem. They will also be able to check all of the boiler’s components and ensure that they are functioning correctly.

Troubleshooting Common Boiler Problems

There are a few common boiler problems that you may encounter. Here are some tips for troubleshooting them:

Leaking water: If your boiler leaks water, it could be due to a faulty valve or pipe. A professional boiler maintenance company can inspect the system and identify the source of the leak.

No heat or hot water: If your boiler isn’t providing heat or hot water, it could be due to many issues, such as a clogged filter, a broken thermostat, or an airlock in the system. A professional boiler maintenance company can identify the source of the problem and provide a solution.

Strange noises: If your boiler is making strange noises, it could be due to a clogged or broken fan. A professional boiler maintenance company can inspect the system and identify the noise source.

Best Practices for Boiler Maintenance

There are a few best practices you should follow regarding boiler maintenance. Here are some tips:

Regularly check the pressure: It’s essential to check the pressure in your boiler regularly. The recommended pressure is usually between one and two bars, but this can vary depending on the type of boiler.

Clean the system: It’s important to regularly clean the system to prevent the build-up of debris and sediment. This can be done with a brush and vacuum cleaner.

Check the safety valves: It’s also important to periodically check them to ensure they function correctly.

Conclusion

In conclusion, it’s important to maintain your boiler to keep it in good condition regularly. Regular maintenance can prevent costly repairs and ensure that your boiler runs efficiently. If you’re having trouble diagnosing or troubleshooting a tricky problem with your boiler, it’s best to call a professional boiler maintenance company like Bay City Boiler. We will be able to quickly and accurately diagnose the problem and provide you with a cost-effective solution.
